In the current global and political climate, religion has been the scapegoat for myriad of ills. It has been used by the powerful to force an agenda and used by the weak to mend fences. Throughout history humans have relied on both religion and politics to push humanity forward. Whatever the belief system, whether one is religious or not… the essence of all religions has always been peace, love and compassion. For this piece I have chosen to focus on the Abrahamic religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism. These religions are so similar and yet are in constant struggle for dominance all over the world. I have been inspired by a medieval time in Al Andulus when these religions flourished due to creative and cultural exchange. Centuries of political and religious cooperation lead to Al Andulus being a beacon of learning and progress in maths, science and astronomy. The arts and architecture of the time spread throughout Europe and Africa. Kilim: Kindness is made up of 3383 building blocks to highlight symmetry, geometry and symbolic repeats creating a pristine beauty that is not offensive to either of the religious sects. The plexiglas backing board comes with a french cleat hanging system, to facilitate easy hanging and no need for additional framing.

I am a 35 year old artist and designer who lives in Cape Tow, South Africa with the husband, the kid and 2 cats. I am a founding partner of successful designer clothing brand, adam&eve having participated in numerous fashion weeks and international exhibitions for the past 10 years. A year ago, I shifted my focus to Art, Interior design and working with new materials. I am current working exclusively with tiny plastic building blocks. My fascination with creating large-scale works from plastic building blocks comes from my love of minute detail and intricate patterns. I discovered the art of tessellation on a recent trip to Morocco. I loved how every surface was painstakingly adorned to perfection, and the appreciation from both locals and visitors. Tessellation is a highly symmetric, edge-to-edge tiling using a simple porcelain shape. I hope to highlight and recreate the art form of tessellation in a modern way using plastic building blocks. This medium creates an intense nostalgia and relevance for all ages. I absolutely love watching people realize that the artwork is created with building blocks. Followed by the overwhelming need to touch the artwork because its such a tactile medium, and the sheer happiness they feel when I reassure them that they can indeed touch it. It makes me so happy.
