About The Artwork

The artwork is a talisman for "warrior" spirit. The feathers (although dyed turkey feathers to conform to US laws) invoke the spirit of Crow and his larger brother, Raven. The "wing" aspect compels the viewer to "take flight"...to be truly free of the social confines that keep us from achieving our bravest, best selves. The curly willow stick mimics a wand, giving us the power to achieve transformation. This is an artwork and a meditation for daily renewal. The medium is encaustic painting and collage. Encaustic paint is wax based and is applied hot (melted) to a prepared cradled wood surface. The wax is kept melted on a heated palette (griddle) and each layer of wax is fused to the underlying layers through use of a heat gun or iron. Each work is comprised of dozens of layers of wax. According to R & F Paints website, the word ‘encaustic’ comes from the Greek word enkaiein, meaning to burn in, referring to the process of fusing the paint. This particular piece contains leather, wood bark, handmade paper, dyed craft turkey feathers, dyed craft feathers, curly willow stick and wax paint. The natural wood sides and back are completely wax free. The price of this piece is for the physical art only; I will retain copyright.

Intuitively evolved, emerging artist. My art has advanced through practice, study and patience. I divide my time between two mediums, digital and encaustic collage where often the boundaries intersect in one artistic statement. Layers of imagery, line and pigment are my tools. Time invested in the mediums has been my teacher. My current focus is on communication in the digital media age with particular attention to symbols that have emerged with new meaning and popularity in the common vernacular. Universal symbolism of everyday use contrasted with antiquated printed media portends to the loss of civility and distrust in the current misinformation moment. Using ASCII to Binary conversions of simple phrases layered with color symbolism and phrasing, I tell a contemporary tale of nationalism amid a desensitized public.
