Motion and Stasis V Collage

Motion-Stasis V This work began with the refractive character of the glass bottles. Printing with rice paper from a soft plate uniquely picks up subtle variations of texture and color. I built the composition by adding layers, interested in the lively play of color and light created in a composition of static elements. The movement of the live creatures, the fish and bird, added to the contrasts. Machine stitching created an additional layer of texture and added direction. My printing-collage process allows lots of tactile involvement with the subject matter. I print all the images and textures with acrylics as monotypes on rice paper. Hand-cut stencils created the bottles, plant forms, and the fish and bird. As I collage onto the watercolor paper, the rice paper actually bonds to the substrate. It is like watching something come alive. Float mounted presentation in a birch shadow box, under acrylic, reveals the beautiful natural deckle edge of the watercolor paper. This work is a signed, one-of-a-kind original.
