My name is Karen Sikie and I am a collage artist in Los Angeles. After hearing about the Residential Schools in Canada, I started to do some research to learn more and I came upon the website Women of the White Buffalo, a documentary film by Deborah Anderson that highlights the many issues facing the Indigenous people, especially women and girls. I was so inspired by the faces and the stories of the women of the Lakota tribe, who are featured in the documentary, on an impulse I reached out to Ms Anderson. My intention was do a portrait of one or more of the women feature so my work could be of service of the issues being raised in their stories. She responded and suggested that I do a Paper Mosaic collage inspired by the poster for the documentary which is the image of Delacina Chief Eagle with a handprint of an upside-down flag covering her mouth. This signifies the silence around these issues and the upside down flag is a symbol of distress. This piece entitled She Speaks, is intended to spark conversation, awareness and healing for the Indigenous women of the Americas. So, I put her mouth dead center on the panel to symbolize the start of many more conversations. Every element of the piece is a symbol. But for me the most powerful is the hand written name of just some of the women and girls missing from 2021 that is in the background. My intention is that She Speaks, is a apart of the #SilenceNoMore movement for education and healing for all the indigenous peoples of the Americas. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to charities that support Native Americans. Contact me for more info.

Nature’s infinite array of beautiful forms, and patterns are my muse. It’s feast for the eyes is an invitation to dwell on the surface but ultimately a distraction for deeper themes such as; energy, movement and the flow of life and death as the natural cycles of nature. These ideas are the underpinning of my work. The Human figure I also consider a part of the natural world. Mapping a face is as unique as a snowflake. Paper Mosaics, is essentially a highly specialized form of collage, I use all types of decorative and recycled papers. Often, I will subdue the patterns on the papers with a wash of paint so it steps into the back ground, only to be realized upon closer inspection. I then meticulously hand cut the paper and apply it to a drawing that has been applied to a panel and acts like a map, the structure from which the collage will emerge, piece by piece like a mosaic the image emerges. Shapes, forms and patterns are my language. I hope my work serves as reminder that we are all connected to each other and the Nature, and just like my Paper Mosaics, each piece of paper that is cut to a specific shape is utterly unique and different yet essential to the whole.
