Taking a look at the role of women in the home in the 1950’s and how some attitudes have changed while others remain. This collage draws on adverts from 1950's women's magazines - the words have been manipulated and so invite the viewer to reflect on the position of women in today’s society. Growing up in the 1960’s, the artist is well placed to question why so much energy is needed to hold down home and work, and why getting the right balance is still a challenge. The process begins searching through 1950's magazines to find the source material to build a collage of words and images. The collages are then hand painted with wash and paint pens to add colour and detail. The finished collages are enlarged onto fine art paper. The final but most labour intensive of the process is adding the thousands of crystals, gold and silver leaf, lacquer and metallic paint. The strength of the message is important but with these prints Elizabeth has still created art that is pleasurable to look at with obsessive attention to detail and perfect execution.
