“In truth we know nothing about anything,” the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus famously wrote. Proposing that only atoms, and the vacuum in which they float, are actually real, he likened the physical world to an enormous rainfall, where objects and events come into being when particles accidentally collide. Photography, a mechanical means to capture the world at a given moment, offers unique opportunities to reflect on the nature of reality and the passage of time. Each picture, lifted by the camera from the stream of events, is a sampling of life in progress, a vivid memento of human experience. The photograph assumes meaning, like all images, only through an act of narration, connecting it in our minds to other stories, beliefs and occurrences. My photo-based work stems from an investigation of the image itself, it’s nature as an optical reflection of occurrences filled with personal and cultural meaning. I use the camera, and by extension the computer, as a kind of mnemonic device to create visual substitutes of things both real and imagined. All my images are constructions, abstracted amalgams of random events in my life as I remember them.
