The King James I is one of my crown jewels and forms part of a series of street art works that include Felix the Cat, the Pink Panther, "When Angels Cry", "Celebrity Breakfast" and "Walking the Dog". Here King James has more to do with Lebron James rather than the historical character. Why I love it: stark, pop art inspired street art, a rebellious yet complex beauty. Blue is my favorite color, here I use Imperial Blue in the background and Pacific Blue for the crown. The stark white left side of the face makes for wonderful contrast with the dark blue, yet I put a red uncalled for and rebellious line to mark the separation of face and background. The rebellious placement and execution contrasts with the aesthetic order and straightforward composition. Here we have structured rebellion - and for me this is the secret of it´s beauty. The base of the crown is in "Red Purple", a gloriously rich color that keeps and contrasts in this heavy color palette, my specialty. The right eye has nothing to do with the left eye, for more "separatist" flow, perhaps even from another face colored in "Safety Yellow", yet another glorious very thick and uncompromising shade. The red patch under the eye is a bruise or a tear drop? Left for the viewer to decide. Whilst the rest of the work is ornamentation, the elements of the face and crown capture a complex "2 faced figure" ugly in it´s unconventional approach to symmetry yet absolutely gorgeous in it´s approach to color, sytem and theme. It is the portrait of a proud yet unsure King, damaged or shedding a tear, yet most likely beautiful to his court and subjects.
