‘Seascape’ is a digital art piece that provides a fanciful view of life in the sea. The viewpoint is that of a camera lens situated half above and half below the sea surface. A distant island, which is a focus of the art, is replete with palm trees, other vegetation, and a white sandy beach. The reef below the water line is lit by sunshine and is the home to 30 types of plants and 22 types of fish, shellfish, and jellyfish. Many of the smaller fish are using the reef plants for protection. The imaginary sea world has a 3D flare, where light and shadow interplay to provide a sense of reality. My objective is to help the viewer of the piece feel as though they are in the ocean and enjoying the moment. The piece combines digital graphics with a merged photograph of a water line to produce a novel portrayal of a reef and its surroundings. I use 2.5D layering for all the graphics using an extremely time-consuming process. Each part of each of the plants and animals is subjected to special graphical effects that give them a 3D appearance. As a result, eyes pop on the fish and the stems appear to have a round cross section on the plants. The high-quality graphics are printed using Fujiflex on Dibond, an aluminum composite material. The piece uses a ⅛” acrylic overlay to add additional depth to the appearance. The combination of Fujiflex and Dibond provide exceptional color and durability. I have chosen a mid-gloss finish to accentuate the visual impact.

The dichotomies of art and science, form and function, and natural beauty and engineering have always intrigued me. While using the technical rigor of engineering for much of my work, I nevertheless always have incorporated beauty into any final product. Now, I combine some of those same dichotomies into what I believe to be attractive portrayals of nature and the manifestation of everyday emotion. Each art piece in various ways combine detailed digital graphics, photography, laser cut overlays, 3D printed models with moving parts, and sculptures derived from overlapping elements. Creating beauty using sophisticated techniques has become my passion.
