Accidental Degeneracies - From the 'Forbidden Energy' Series A large series of work exploring notions of energy, luminosity and flow. Indian Ink and Wax on Fabriano watercolour paper. ‘Forbidden Energy’ is an ongoing series of works referencing the physics of bioluminescence. Phosphorescent materials may continue to emit an afterglow ranging from a few microseconds to many hours after the excitation is removed. The slower than normal timescales of the molecules reemitting light are associated with "forbidden" energy state transitions in quantum mechanics. As these transitions occur relatively slowly in certain materials, absorbed radiation is reemitted at a lower intensity, ranging from a few microseconds to as much as one second after the excitation is removed

My painting has always been bound up with examination of the land , and in particular, the ephemeral, those forces and presences that cannot be seen but which change and shape the land. I work with the power of drawing and abstraction alongside the behaviour of waters in my ongoing ‘Flow Project’ to bring a new dimension to the vital work of Slow the Flow. My process involves intuition and immediacy in relation to specific environments. I collect, examine and engage with on-site data as a primary source for work which is based in knowledge of movement, the flow, geology, entropy, landscape and place both celebrating and raising awareness of the unique and fragile nature of our environment. The work has taken me to a range of habitats to examine them in new ways and consider how each small part of our upland and lowland environment can potentially be part of a solution to the problems of flooding in the valley. Working in a range of media including oil paint, watercolour, drawing sometimes on a large scale, I have have studied and visited the River Calder and its catchment in the valley bottom, in higher upland areas and at its tributary sources high on the moors above Todmorden. Currently finishing an artists residency with Slow the flow- natural flood management action group. I have been a practising and lecturing artist all my adult life, having graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a Master of Art (Fine Art) and BA Honours Degree in Fine Art. Highlights of my career have included being selected for the Sunday Times Watercolor competition (2020), and working on live installations at the Whitworth Gallery and Victoria Baths Manchester. (2008 and 2011) Artists Residency with Slow the Flow - part of my work is chronicled in the blog for the project – The Flow Project on Wordpress. https://theflowprojectannefox.wordpress.com/
