Astral Disturbance Drawing

This drawing of a series was the result of a personal theory, not unlike surrealist automatic drawing, that spontaneously drawn marks could result in a composition that originates in part from the subconscious. They are works of lightness and density, compositions evolving from the simple act of making marks. The works are India ink on a prepared fabric surface, consisting of a tightly woven fabric pressed into a mixture of sizing and gesso, then applied on a ¼” hardwood plywood panel. Standard ink nibs are used with various colored inks. They are finished with a clear, matte acrylic spray. I approach the works from all four sides while the piece is underway, not having an up, down, right or left until the composition is nearly complete. It is the intent to let the composition extend to the edges of the board to convey a sense of limitless space. I use the elements of chance, spontaneity, and abstraction to convey a sense of energy, where the density of the drawing’s marks reflect the richness of visual stimulus all around us. The work ships with a contemporary gun metal floater frame with wire hanger. .
