ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist : Kriangkrai Kongkhanun Blue Ball.Acrylic.Chinese ink. Pen. Pencil on Thai handmade paper. 80 x 60 cm. 2013. Contemporary Abysses Human beings are liable to commit wrong doings, forget ethics and let themselves overwhelmed by lust. The wrong doings, such as the possession of vengeance, anger, hatred, greed and jealously, have deep-rooted in human lives, and become the dark side of human beings like germs that are hiding in human bodies. What we can do is to know about these wrong doings o that we can peacefully cope with them without causing dangers to ourselves. However, whenever our minds are weakened, these germs will proliferate, spread and become uncontrollable until we, the hosts, become non-human. Kriangkrai Kongkhanun desired to depict the emotions and feeling of human beings whose minds are seized by wrong doings, which are also fundamental emotions of human beings. A mind that falls deep into the abyss of sins and wrong doings is like a life that falls deep into the abyss of an ocean. This sinful abyss is full of various negative emotions and feelings. Thus, Kriangkrai imagines the worlds of sin by adapting the sceneries of devils and demons described in different legends and the ancient Buddhist scripture. These devils and demons have the appearances that reflect their “Karma” (What they have done). This scenery depicts the abstract concepts of hatred, anger, vengeance, greed and jealousy, each of which has its own shape which Kriangkrai designs in order to symbolize people who commit wrong doings. This work incorporates both the thing in the past and those currently happening, so it is named “Contemporary Abysses”. Kriangkrai Kongkhanun

Kriangkrai Kongkhanun, who studied at art schools in Thailand as well as in Italy, visiting the most important art museums in the West on a trip to Europe, makes a daring attempt to forge a link between the Buddhist symbolism found in traditional pictures and the western imagery of the Renaissance and the 19th century. The Buddhist codex of ethics conditions his life philosophy and way of thinking. The point of departure for Kriangkrai's art is, however, the knowledge that negative human traits, such as anger, hatred and selfishness, namely evil properties, are so closely woven into human life that they always resurface from the subconscious. Kriangkrai's series of woodcuts "˜Touching of An Ignorance' of 2009 once again refers to the eternal desires that arise out of the subconscious and that mankind cannot resist despite his striving for good. From a correctly dressed individual in a suit and tie, they develop into a four-headed monster with countless eyes and faces, holding the mask of evil up to the winged chimera. In the series "˜Spiritual Disease' four related pictures in each case with different winged demons, insects with human heads, fantastic reptiles, carnivorous plants with snarling jaws and wondrous flowers and vegetation represent the scourge of the soul. The demons of the Underworld are not shown as realistically imaginable creatures but as the embodiment of evil. They are Hell on earth.
