Christina Barrera recently graduated with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts and Art History from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida where she attended the Alexander W. Dreyfoos jr. High School of the Arts. Christina's work deals with, examines, and visualizes the structure of the universe through ideas found in super string theory, multiverse theory, and science of mind ideology. She is thinking about the idea that the basic element building our universe and our existence is a universal energy or consciousness with the use of woven imagery, undulating, permeable planes, and forms derived from physical models of potential other universes or dimensions. Barrera intuitively creates, alters, and combines forms and planes of existence in order to explore the idea that all things are the same in their material and immaterial existences despite their seeming separateness. Barrera's works incorporate painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture, photography and textile. She has received many honors and awards, most notable the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Scholarship, which allowed her to attend MICA on a full tuition, room and board scholarship. Barrera also received scholarship to study abroad in Florence, Italy in the Spring of 2009 and received one of three Diversity in the Arts Internships at the Walters Art Musuem, where she worked in the department of Rare Books and Manuscripts. Barrera has recently shown at School 33 and D Center in Baltimore, MD. She hopes to live in Baltimore, travel, and participate in artist residencies before applying to a graduate programs and ultimately keeping her studio practice alongside a professorship at an art university. Christina Barrera currently lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland.
