Cover Up is inspired by the second skin I, as a young woman, put on to enter public spaces - my biker jacket. A form of protection; the harder it looks, the better to keep me safe. hellehowl is a London based visual artist whose practice is an attempt to unpick her own experiences of womanhood within the context of patriarchal abuses. In developing each of her "stories" she identifies a central emotive theme or narrative and then develops individual pieces of work from that core whilst keeping a web-like sense of interconnectivity between them. The approach echoes the piecing together of a crime scene in a detective drama, for her it is the piecing together of her own lived experiences as a woman. She utilises cross disciplinary methods (drawing, photography, sculpture, painting, digital methods, filmmaking, poetry) so as to enable the viewer to become fully immersed in experiencing the narrative through many pathways, an attempt to make it possible to step inside the artist's perspective. Her central desire is to develop a body of work that communicates the inner and outer struggle of fully embodying her feminine potential (physical, spiritual, psychological, emotional) within a culture and society that has, historically and still currently, preferred the division and subjugation of swathes of the feminine experience.
