‘Agôn’, ‘Aléa’, ‘Mimicry’ and ‘Ilinx’, that is how the French sociologist Roger Callois (1913 – 1978) denominates the 4 forms of games and play in his influential book ‘Man, Play and Games’ (1961). In more understandable terms that is, respectively: 'Competition' (fight, or coping with what you are confronted with), 'Luck' (or coincidence, probability and serendipity), 'Mimesis' (or imitation, simulation and make-belief) and 'Thrill' (excitation, also in the sense of anxiety, loss of control, altering perception).
