About The Artwork

This charcoal drawing was inspired by the account of the Resurrection. It follows the Hebraic custom of the dinner guest leaving his napkin in an unfolded state at the dinner table signifying that he will return. If the guest had not intended to return to the table he would have folded the napkin carefully and neatly.The ceramic jar in the foreground represents the jar of precious oils and spices with which Mary Magdalene had intended to anoint Jesus body. However, finding the tomb empty she hurriedly put the jar down and the lid has fallen to the side. The scene is lit by the raking light from the right of the picture, as if entering from the open tomb entrance,

The DU TOIT PHOTOGRAVURE studio is owned and operated by Herman du Toit who was born and raised in Johannesburg South Africa. He first studied printmaking under the British printmaker Michael Taylor at the former University of Natal in South Africa in the 1970s. He has had a long and extensive career in fine arts starting as a lecturer (associate professor) in printmaking and art history at the former Natal Technikon, where he became head of the printmaking department. Later he served as director (dean) of the School of Fine Arts at the Durban University of Technology. On immigrating to the United States in 1993, Du Toit curated exhibitions and served as head of education and research for an extended period at the Brigham Young University Museum of Art. He has also had over 20 years of printmaking and graphic art experience.
