About The Artwork

In 2017 Marisa Rappard started working on a series of drawings depicting a mesmerizing stream of hatchings. She treats the paper with random stains of acrylics and then covers the paint with lines in black ink. By repeating lines she creates dense patches that collide, together forming an image meandering between figuration and abstraction. 'Fabricator' is one of the largest works from this series. Though the image is abstract the repetitions of black lines in different shapes and forms suggest a landscape with mulitple suns radiating, clouds and mountains and magical pots. In the centre a stacking of lines suggests a building-like machine that is the instigator of all movements going on in the image, a Fabricator making it all up. The coloured painting that is covered by the lines can hardly be discerned anymore, it is hidden beneath all fabrications. This artwork was inspired by recent news items on the distortion of truth going on on the internet: alternative facts, filter bubbles, fake news making it impossible to know what is true and what is not. The work consists of three separate pieces of paper. This work was acquiered by the NOG/Stedelijk Museum Schiedam collection in 2018.
