I create works showing moments or artifacts that question their own actual existence within our natural world. Keeping the images vague and often abstracted I challenge my viewers to grapple with the idea of what exists in our reality and what does not. The work displays a reciprocal relationship between microcosmic and expanded worlds as well as the balance between object and space. Although void of a human presence the imagery seems to exist in a sort of alternate or irrational facet of our own cognitive perception. All of the imagery I use is translated through my hand from a sort of memory bank of the images and experiences derived from my interaction with the natural world. Primarily I use mechanical graphite pencil to obtain a painstaking and meticulously rendered texture within each object I manifest. The process of creating invented, detailed and repetitive textures become a meditative reflection on mark making. In a way it is an unconscious process, like automatic drawing or asemic writing. The obsessive compulsion for control within the work is not only reflected in the mark making but in the material. Various sized mechanical Graphite pencils are the primary tools for all of the work. I choose to use mechanical because the size of each mark remains uniform throughout my entire process. I also incorporate cut paper and powdered graphite elements to contrast the detail within the form; in a way it is a release for my self as the maker and for the viewers eye. I will also create large-scale murals that often serve as backdrops for my smaller drawings when I display my work, further supporting themes of the micro and macro.
