ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Everything is wrong with this picture. Even the manji can feel unsettling, sitting as motifs on either side of a row of white chrysanthemums. Animal like figures are held on ropes by a kimono clad puppeteer. I am influenced by Beardsley, where a narrative is always present and some of the figures in his drawings hover between animal, human and demonic. Sumi-e ink on washi style paper.
