Hoelun-mother of Genghis Khan Drawing

Hoelun means cloud. In the Mongol world,Hoelun is called the wife of honor,counsel, reason, and cold determination. At a young age,Hoelun was betrothed to a nobleman named Chiledu, the brother of the Merkit chief Tohtoh Beki. Returning to the groom's camp, the young fell into a trap set by Noyon Yesugei-bagatur and his brothers; Chiledu fled, and Hoelun became Yesugei's main wife, giving birth to five children in marriage: four sons (Temujin — the future Genghis Khan, Khasar, Kachiun, Temuge) and a daughter Temulun. After Yesugei's death around 1171, his closest associates left the former chief's family, and for several years Hoelun and her children lived in poverty.
