ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Kilala This drawing is made on paper, the paper is glued on aluminium. Behind that there is a small frame of pieces of wood to get some distance from the wooden panel that is behind. The wooden panel is larger then the drawing. wooden frame and background panel are painted in nice subtile colours. During my stay in Ireland as artist in residence,2015, I saw many wonderfull landscapes and villages in the North. It inspired me to make drawings. This drawing I made after a visit to Kilala Harbour. Out of use because of the seasand, but still with old fishermans boats lying there. Quitly sleeping in the water with all kinds of things on the deck. As if time has stood still. I made a serie of 5 abstract drawings about this wonderfull situation.

Monique van Stokkum (1952) is a Dutch artist. Currently she makes drawings. THE DELICATE LINE Since 2015 I make drawings again. In the beginning of my artist careeer I started with drawing (ca. 1975), then a period of painting followed . And now I'm back to my old love. The directness, grim, tenderness and strength of the drawing. THEME Of course I am touched by what is happening in the world. In my work I do not react literally on the world news. Yet it is about universal themes in which people can recognize themselves. The viewer looks for elements of life. My work gets meaning through their associations and fantasies. Landscapes, animals and people are my sources of inspiration. Not strange for someone who is born and raised in the woods. I can now say that the death of my son (2005) brought about major changes in my work. Now, after more than 10 years, I feel the space again which was not there for a long time. Since 2013 I make my Objects to Remember. Large and small painted objects in wich memories may be stored. Works of art with an extra personal significance.
