About The Artwork

Sea stories series. II. This work is a part of series created during the work on illustrations for the book about history and Biology of White and Barents Seas. As a biologist myself, in this series I reflect my admiration of the underwater world complexity and beauty. The houses on the shore are traditional Northern wooden houses, as well used to accommodate Biological stations. I try to link in one image a harmony of traditional life of the coastal community, and also harsh conditions of this habitat for people and for the sea creatures. This technique is a special type of a monotype technique, where I use the mixture of Linseed oil and oil paints to produce one print on a textured paper. Here some oil drawing is added on the top.

I am an artist and illustrator from Norway. Also I used to work as a biologist with specialization in marine invertebrates and single cell organisms. I began to work within illustration and illustration research at the crossroad of sciences and arts. To me the illustration is a tool that allows grabbing the essence of feelings, personal experiences and scientific questions alike and to render them comprehensible to a wide audience. My projects won scholarships from Norwegian Illustration Fund and Grafill, presented at the International Illustration Research Symposium Illustrating Mental Health. I had my works exhibited in both personal exhibitions and as a part of joint projects. My work is not only striving to make complex things clear, but is also calling to be mindful of the way society excludes certain types of experiences, be that due to lack of representation or the absence of an adequate language. Illustration then serves to develop the lacking vocabulary, which is missing for one to describe the questions concerning various aspects of life.
