ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Title: Memory Sculpture: Echoes of the Great Machine Size: 30 x 21 cm / 11,8“ x 8,3“ Year: 2021 "Gedächtnisskulptur – Echos der großen Maschine" (Memory Sculpture: Echoes of the Great Machine) is a work from the series "Memory Sculpture Interactions", an interactive performative setting in exchange with other artists (e.g. from the fields of music, literature, film, performance), in which the works are created during the performative exchange. This work is based on an interaction with Michael Fischer on no-input mixer and drum machine. What would our lives look like, if we worked on our memories like they were sculptures? That is the initial question behind the concept of "Memory Sculpture" ("Gedächtnisskulptur.") Memory Sculptures are created on the basis of philosophical, psychological, or literary concepts. Based on a symbol-language the displayed drawings act as thinking tools to design an internal architecture of sculptural memory. The process of creation varies, on the one hand there are interactive performative settings in exchange with other artists (e.g. from the fields of music, literature, film, performance), where the works are created during the performative exchange. On the other hand, there are clearly defined symbol formations that are developed over months and years. This work is signed on the reverse and provided with a work stamp as well as an artist stamp with information about the materials, year of creation, title, size etc.

Drawing as sculpting into oneself. "In Mersolis Schöne's artistic work, there are fascinating connections and correspondences between drawing, text, film, and music, on or in front of philosophical underpinnings and backgrounds, as well as between him and artists from all disciplines." (INSEL) Mersolis Schöne is a German Artist, Film Director, and Researcher based in Vienna, Austria. He is a member of Künstlerhaus Wien in Austria, The Professional Association of Visual Artists in Germany, and other associations. The Memory Sculpture drawings presented at Saatchi serve as process-oriented interaction and thinking tools to design an internal architecture of sculptural memory. They consist of a series of recurring symbols that are arranged in new compositions. Each symbol has a fixed meaning, and new meanings are created by combining these individual symbols into symbol formations. During the drawing process, places of reflection, encounter and conceptualization are to be created. For this reason, there is often interaction with other artists, in which the works are created during the performative exchange.
