About The Artwork

"Merging Spheres" is part of Cline's Unrighteous Wars Series, which reflects upon the U.S. conflict in the Middle East. The series acts as a conduit for Cline's thoughts, communicating her anger and grief with the political climate. The work is split into two sections, as Cline uses appropriated images to cobble together two humanoid figures. Each figure is enclosed in a circle of barbed wire, which intertwines in the center to create a horizontal figure-eight symbol. The figure on the left is given the face of Pierrot the mime, who poses with both arms stretched outwards. Cline cobbles Pierrot's body together with various repurposed images, including eagles' feet, shells, grapes, and multiple disembodied limbs. Circling around the figure are more stamped images, including fighter jets, beetles, shells, two flaming hearts, and a circle of blood-red lizards. On the right, is another crowned figure, pieced together with a multitude of colorful images. The figure has a feminine face, that peeks out from inside the mouth of a crocodile. She is given a corseted torso with two outstretched arms. The lower portion of her body is even more chaotic, with a depiction of a rooster in front of shells, spikes, shoes, and insects. At the very center is a tiny mime figure. Floating around the crocodile woman is a similar assortment of images, with insects, ribbons, dark blue stars, two flaming hearts, and a tiny naked woman.
