This 'Oval Cluster' drawing in fine line pens is filled with alcohol markers in complimentary neutrals and blues. This drawing took many hours to complete with the initial design drawn in fine line pens in strings of cell like shapes. On a second pass I ensure all cells are defined and any gaps are filled. On a third pass I colour the cells alcohol markers. I find this repetitive style of drawing calming and meditative and I love to fully absorb myself in the process. I’m heavily influenced by our natural environment and the patterns within it. This piece was inspired by natural curved shapes found on the shoreline in the form of stones, shells and fossils combined with my love for natures patterns hidden to the naked eye. I love using colour to help lift the mood in a room and sell my art in white frames to offer a seamless wall mount without distracting from the colour of the piece. My drawings are usually unplanned, I draw upon memories of patterns and shapes I've seen in nature, letting the direction form organically, allowing my mind time to wander and inspiration to influence my choice of colour and shape. I find the repetitive flow of drawing cell like shapes calming and the perfect antidote to the stresses of life. I was first influenced to draw in cell like shapes after discovering artwork by Ernst Haeckel in 2018. This led to a deep dive into looking at images of microscopic sea life and micrographs of plant cells. I was fascinated by the intricate patterns and shapes hidden to the naked eye. These have now become a subconscious influence in all my work. combined with inspiration I find while exploring the natural environment where I live in the South Downs National Park in Hampshire (UK), specifically local forests, heathland and beaches. I’m also interested in the similarities of natures patterns in all forms and dimensions from micrographs of plant cells to areal images of the worlds surface.

I draw in permanent fine line pens and alcohol markers on smooth Bristol board. My drawings are often unplanned, influenced by patterns and shapes in nature. Each drawing is my form of art therapy, a source of relaxation and meditation. I enjoy letting the direction form organically, allowing my mind time to wander and inspiration to influence my choice of colour and shape. Nature is an awe inspiring source of interest and beauty that never ceases to surprise and inspire me.
