I am a recent Fine Art graduate from the University of East London. As an artist I work primarily within the mediums of drawing, sculpture and installation. During the course of my degree I began exploring the way in which a work can be created within a space, the relationship between creation and location, the transience of site specific working practice, the associations that my work can provoke, exploring a sense of ambiguity between figuration and abstraction and the way in which an artwork can permeate the environment in which it is created and displayed. I began to explore drawing and sculptures formal qualities through using motifs which may potentially evoke associations in the mind of the viewer, whilst leaving or encouraging a sense of ambiguity, and exploring how the imagery and associations of my work can be both sensual and sinister. As an artist I work primarily within the mediums of drawing and installation. I use forms and visual motifs which may provoke evocations in the mind of the viewer such as hair, cloth, dress, and objects associated with ideas of beauty and identity whose depiction often creates a sense of ambiguity between figuration and abstraction. My work examines concepts of self perception and the elements of the self which can remain hidden or repressed, investigating the relationship between beauty and repulsion, repression and expression and how these concepts can be interpreted as both sensual and sinister. How that what appears beautiful on initial viewing can on closer inspection suggest an underlying tension which hints at something altogether darker. The work represents both how the repression of self can be stifling and repressive but also how the unfurling and expression of aspects of personality previously concealed can be both a and frightening and liberating experience.
