ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece was created with pure Japanese Ink dripped horizontally using a pipette and dropper on watercolour paper. The title explains metaphorically the intention behind this piece. Why are we always in such a haste? We forget to stop and smile and breathe.

A full-time artist, with a background in interior design, Amena Bandukwala is an avid traveller and a global citizen who has thus far lived in eight cities across three continents. Born and raised in Dubai and currently residing in Sydney, Australia, she is a contemporary artist whose experiences as a traveller have exposed her to many cultures and ideologies. This quest of personal and professional enrichment has contributed towards the evolution of her work as an artist. She translates her thoughts and her human experiences into the black white and grey, painting with relentless, repetitive, linguistically inspired patterns and sometimes with the primal instincts of an action painter. 'My work has been and continues to be a meticulous experiment in a monochromatic palette. My interest lays in the socially conditioned boundaries that confine our thinking and behaviour, as well as the frivolous freethinking spirituality that makes us who we truly are. My approach is process-based improvisation, an intricate exploration of our inner contradictions. Each mark, stroke and form is part of observations of the bipolar qualities we all have hidden within us: The need to communicate, to follow, and change – to be someone else. I execute my work with an intensity to express this emotional, passionate or even political inner conflict.' My work is: spontaneous, emotional, relentless.
