ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece is a progression from the Thirty Three series started in 2018, taking the visuals created during artist’s bus commute between home and art studio, and then replicating them in an entirely controlled studio. The work juxtaposes perfect and imperfect lines, adding a more reflective dimension to the series’ focus on ideals. The colors are selected from the Sherwin Williams 2018 - 2022 color forecasts for interiors and activate a debate between personal taste, trend/consumerism and collective cultural identity. The artwork is unframed, authenticated with artist’s signature, date and blind embossing stamp.

Portuguese-American artist Mário Pires Cordeiro experiments with media and color as he explores the interaction between art and design, with a larger intention to comment on the interwoven relationship between visual art and functional objects. His practice is deeply rooted in the theme of color— unpacking the symbolic and cultural meanings imposed on it in contemporary society by sourcing colors from trends and design forecasts as well as from particular environments or publications. He received his MFA at the University of London and completed three years of a PhD researching color trends
in fine arts. He has been commissioned by the Olympic and Paralympic Games Committee and has put on several solo and group exhibitions. He is currently a resident artist of the Minnesota Street Project Studio Program, San Francisco, California.
