About The Artwork

"Tightening the Koshihimo" is a self-portrait of the artist in the process of dressing in a kimono. Her face obscured and faded, the focus of the piece becomes the hands tightening a cord around the waste. While wearing kimono, the traditional Japanese garment, the artist feels her identity is subsumed by the outfit she wears. The tightening of the koshihimo cord depicted is a crucial step in wearing kimono correctly; if this cord loosens, the outfit will loosed and come off the wearer. As a non-Japanese person, the artist tries to wear her kimono as correctly as possible. A loose koshihimo is out of the question.
