Born in 1965 in Bridge of Allan, Scotland. Graduate of Edinburgh College of Art. The work presented here is diverse and spans some number of years- approximately ten years or so in total- and some number of re-inventions both in terms of identity as an artist and in terms of materials and processes used.Themes and concerns have always overlapped in my work and themes explored years ago are never finished or put to rest they constantly re-appear, transformed either by further thinking or by exploration in a new material or process. I frequently have the sensation of inching closer to doing what I want to do whilst at the same time seeming to stray aimlessly. Predictably and in equal measure- the sensation of never saying what needs to be said is a constant companion. The issue of conciousness is a recurrent theme this combined with an enduring interest in numerous religions, their iconography, characters and philosophy and a fascination with the physical structure of the universe are enduring concerns. Recently there seems to be some connection between these disparate subjects and the almost mystical revelations of physicists and astronomers that seems to connect- or at the least underscore my explorations. These interests are linked to a growing collection of time based works that try to address or illustrate very personal aspects of human consciousness typically expressed as mystical or transcendental. These works are inspired by and refer to many sources of poetry, religious scripture and contemporary culture and hope to create an ambience that assists a slowing down in the viewer; much of contemporary art slickly tries to tittilate the intellect and to jazz up the art viewers experience. Conversely, I am interested in establishing a quieter environment where the viewer can connect primarily with themselves and their own innate sense of identity to feel a different range of emotions to stimulate a parallel and wholly different series of aesthetic and intellectual connections. This cannot be done well without quiet and absorption.
