About The Artwork

This work is on mylar film, a semi-transparent archival drafting film. It is meant to be viewed from the front side, and should be presented against a white background. Acrylic and ink were floated across the surface and appear wet. Liquid graphite was used to create the dark brushstrokes, which were collaged on the surface of the drawing. My work is heavily influenced by 20th-century abstraction, including work by Jackson Pollock and Morris Louis as well as later practitioners such as Mary Heilmann, Philip Taaffe and Christopher Wool. It uses the language of abstraction to re-present non-objective forms and techniques in new ways.

My work is a formal exploration of the 'language' of abstraction, whereby the various marks (drips, stains, brush strokes, etc) normally associated with spontaneous painterly action are performed off-site and re-presented in a manner that references digital and/or non-linear methods of image creation. The finished artwork is, despite its spontaneous appearance, a hybrid of painting and collage that has been realized slowly over time through much consideration. Richard Feaster received an MFA in Painting from Tulane University, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has exhibited widely in the US and abroad, including the National Academy Museum, City University of New York and the Cheekwood Museum. His work has has been featured in the periodical New American Paintings, among others. Collections include the FirstBank Janet & Jim Ayer’s Collection of Tennessee Art, the Music City Center and the Thompson Hotel. He lives and works in Nashville, TN.
