ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This piece is wet mounted on rice paper and ready to be framed. Material: Ink on red Star Xuan rice paper The piece will be protected and shipped in a mailing tube. Happy to introduce a new artwork of the " Teaching, reality and enlightenment" series. Inspired by action and dynamics in the painting, Here, I used the word" Peace : سلام" in Arabic and blend it with contemporary Arabic Chinese-style calligraphy to be able to evoke the concept of Zen, a theme stemming from my own practice of meditation. In my art work, I produce different effects by changing the amount of ink on my brush, the speed and pressure of my strokes, the placement of the characters on the surface, the size of the strokes, etc. here, I used a special technique which I came up with, to give the characters a “shadow”. This allows the darker strokes to be projected to the foreground while the paler ones float in the background. As you can see in the background, I wrote repeatedly the word "Peace" in Arabic till there's no more ink in the brush. That is my way to connect with the self and achieve peace in the present moment. I aim to translate my own vocabulary of textures, gestures, and techniques with with action and dynamic ink painting.

Maomeii Be. (b. 1975) is a Canadian/Algerian Artist based in Calgary. Classically trained in traditional Arabic calligraphy and Art, his desire to know more about the way in which the written form is expressed in different cultures led him to travel and study with renewed masters. To better express himself, he broke from the tradition and introduced other elements, particularly on his work in large sizes. Maomeii has adopted the journey of spontaneous and abstract style, which involves the informal movement and creativity. His Cognitive calligraphy artwork takes shape through drawings and paintings which are based on classical calligraphic styles and techniques, but that simultaneously break the rules to create an alternative idiom through his own subjective expression to work in a more free-form improvisational style. Researching culture, Asian history, philosophy, storytelling, and martial arts have always been a constant influence to Maomeii and his contemporary Chinese-Arabic fusion and abstract works, where he combines elements of traditional Asian ink painting, Arabic calligraphy, and modern art. In this fusion, Maomeii's style beautifully incorporates the flowing lines of Chinese calligraphy and the larger planes of abstract expressionism as seen in the Western painting. With this multi-cultural dimension, he aims to reach out to the spiritual and material status of people. © Rhythms of calligraphy™
