The frame for this drawing is vintage and was purchased at a thrift store. The frame is part of the work. The frame and the collaged title were inspired by visits to local historic societies and small museums where photographs are framed in simple black frames and hung in groups, usually showing local businesses or places of interest. The drawing was inspired by the rocks and landscapes of the caves and shelters of the Old Leather Man, an itinerant who between 1883 and 1889, walked a circuitous route every 34 days in the United States between the Hudson River in Ossining, NY and the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook, CT. His walk was well documented in local newspapers with recorded times and dates of his appearances. Many photos of the Old Leather Man still exist. The Old Leather Man wore a suit of thick leather that he made himself from boot tops. He slept in caves and natural shelters throughout the region. Artifacts such as hand wrought pipes, small tools, leatherworks, etc. were found in some of these caves and shelters. I first learned of the Old Leather Man from a Connecticut woman who remembers her great-grandmother relating stories of how she had cooked food for him as he passed by each month. The woman had a map of his journey and photos from a newspaper clipping as well as an odd looking "Leather Man" doll. I cannot say why I have been so fascinated with the Old Leather Man but I think most of us have someone in our lives who is odd, eccentric and with whom we empathize and often try to see the world through his or her eyes. That is the Old Leather Man for me. Besides drawings and works on paper, I also make large and small paper mache boulders and life-size paper suits—all inspired by the Old Leather Man.
