I draw and paint imagined landscapes that piece together scenes of conflict, abandonment and disarray. Both my parents were refugees, my mother from war-torn Afghanistan, my father from Communist East Germany. I think the physical and psychological displacement of my parents affected how I was raised. Thus, their circumstances, although I did not experience them, are interconnected with my own. I barely knew my mother because she died when I was four. However, her absence was a constant presence. Using split-level structures that depict scenes of little lifeboats cracked in half, fractured piers and scaffolding, or huddled shapes trying to escape or hide, I show my own abiding sense of helplessness in the face of death. In these reconstructed landscapes that link ecological and psychological upheaval, I explore the enormity and power of external forces in contrast to forces small and fragile.
