Generations: 500 human years in dogs / trade Installation

This monumental work spans a 19 foot wall. Generations: 500 Human Years in Dogs / Trade took two original dogs and through a process of casting in plaster and using slip “shrank” the dogs from 10” tall to 3/4” tall in size. Referencing the history of ceramic trade and my own family history. From my Japanese side, we have a scroll that we can roll out and go back 500 years which equals the generations shown in this piece. I like to think back 500 years when my two sides of my family were so distant and exotic to each other. Imported ceramic items to Europe were a glimpse into this world. With each generation we get farther from the original. There are subtle changes in the dogs and the image degrades at each end. Also the color shifts. The porcelain which was so coveted in Europe has the green cast and the white is actually a lowfire slip. photo by Steven Miller
