About The Artwork

Mobile Punch and Judy Man is a short film inspired by budget British horror of the 1970s and 1980s shot within the backdrop of seaside communities deep in recession and unemployment. Behind the faded grandeur and dilapidated seafronts of Welsh seaside towns, a dark hostility is uncovered. Peter Gimonde is an obsessive man tortured by his seemingly irrational childhood fears of Punch and Judy shows. He spends most of his time in his shed diligently building a personal mobile kiosk to conquer his phobia. On completing the box one night, he casts a lonely figure as he stalks the sea front at Penarth and is overcome by a murderous rage as he walks the pier. After his killing spree he wakes up on the beach that morning. Gimonde is surrounded by angelic children awaiting a performance, one he won’t fail to deliver. This is a story of childhood trauma, loneliness, isolation and a descent into madness. The film will show the duality of man kind through a Punch and Judy like violence, both real and imagined. Filmed in shadow with glimpses of the dreaded striped box on the pier accompanied by a slow narration from Gimonde’s childhood diary finally morphing into a swazzle inflected scream. Thomas Goddard’s practice explores the relationship between the individual and society, the role of misinformation through the media and its effects on contemporary culture through the power of suggestibility and mis-attribution. Works detailing apathy, disaffection, paradoxical beliefs, power, resistance, history, future, excess and anxiety are created in relation to the obsessive repetition in a modern world where possibilities and choices are seemingly endless.
