About The Artwork

Because we don’t know what we see, a work by Linda Arts appears to be a form of optical deception. In a rhythmic sequence of white and black bands, the eye gives in to the brain, which takes off and leaves us reeling. That should give rise to the idea that the concern is not the shortcomings of the eye, but thoughts not easily reached. And if thoughts cannot be reached, we can always try taking a better look. That is what painting is about: looking and thinking. Being able to see something and thereby experience it: painting allows us to look at it, so that we can think about it.

Linda Arts 1971Works and lives in Tilburg, the Nederlands Education1990-1995 Academy for Arts, TilburgDrawing / Painting / Graphic ArtLight and space. Everything I do leads back to these two themes. My quest is capturing the space that lightfall has to offer. The challenge is doing so with few means: a sober use of colour or a subtile fysical interference somewhere.. The smallest detail or change of sequece can lead me to a whole new perspective. The journey is the search for it. What is that the alienating and unexpected altering effect that lightfall can create, often caused by the smallest interference or simplest shift in details? From the beginning I have produced, next to paintings and graphic work, a number of light installations and site specific works. For me they mean stepping over the bounderies a painting has and seeking a dialogue with its surrounding space. Painting however, has remained my basis and point of departure. Usually my works are painted in black, white and a broad range of in-between greys. More frequent I add a single color nowadays.Ive narrowed down my artistic territory on purpose. What might seem limiting to others is inspirering to me, showing me an endless range of possibilities because of the restrictionsThe sober colour use is deliberate choice. It obligates me to stay close to what the essence of light really is and means to me. Revealing it goes beyond just reducing colour. In addition to the use of black and white I try to link more extremes and make opposites meet. Those extremes manifest themselves in horizontal and vertical, spatial and flat, glossy and matte, but they are also intrinsic to my way of working. The paintings are not only the result of a systematic approach, where the structure is determined beforehand. They also are the product of my intuition and amazement at what presents itself throughout the process of painting. Likewise, the works derive their expression not only from the meditative precision with which they have been carried out, but also from the small irregularities that are the deliberate sign of the maker(s hand).
