The Queen - Platinum Jubilee Installation

This piece was inspired by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations this year. The country celebrated with an array of noteworthy events and experiences. As an artist who started working on paper quilling portraits using packed-paper-quills in the year 2013, this event seemed like the perfect setting to dive into another large and detailed portrait. This piece is the Queen’s portrait placed on the flag of the United Kingdom; created using rolls of paper (paper quilling technique) of varying height, packed together tightly to create the shape of the logo. The carefully chosen, varying heights of the quills, add to depth perception. The piece holds over 2400 individual quills, hand-rolled and stuck individually on (mm) mountboard, and comes framed. The paper used for the quills ranges between 120gsm - 250gsm, which allows for a more durable paper quill that will hold over time. The heavier paper was used to give a bit more body to areas of the portrait that required more structure, for example, the crown. This ensured the jewels had a strong base of paper to hold when glued on. Every frame created for quilling pieces, including this one, is bespoke to the artwork and handmade. The wood colour, texture and width for the framing and mounting are personally chosen and matched at the framers for every individual quilling piece. This step is taken to ensure the frame or the mounting complement the artwork as best as possible.
