Smith's multi-disciplinary work documents the human experience, a master at exploring our very essence she succinctly shows all of our complexities and contradictions. How we think and how we feel, how we interact in relationships, the joy and pleasure in life as well as the pain and the heartache. Smith’s artistic creativity stems from an early age. Her Swedish and English-Romani heritage gives her a rich background of eclectic influences. She worked in music for many years touring the globe, her art reflects this diversity of interests and various sources of inspiration. She works in charcoal, acrylic, neon and gold leaf mostly. Her raw line drawings of figures captured in personal moments with little extracts of original text stems from an admiration of Tracey Emin’s intimate work.  The mood and feeling is perhaps drawn from her affection for Marlene Dumas. For Kim, both of these great artists possess an honesty and directness, which has had a profound effect on her practice and inspired a unique romantic poetry to her own work. Her sold out series of lips, covered in gold leaf are sensual and seductive, acknowledging the fact that often what is communicated is rarely actually spoken. Kim paints hearts on a regular basis, with flowing text in and around the symbol, again blurring the distinction between what is felt and what is said. The same is true with her ongoing neon work, where her handwritten text is revised and reworked, take for example a neon installation from 2016 ‘This time is yours (crossed out), mine (crossed out) ours…’ reflecting the constant flux and change in perspective and perception. How everything is transient and fleeting including personal ownership of place and time is a concept she explores. In short, her work is from the heart. It is touching and at times full of pathos, for the viewer it expresses the sentiments and feelings that are within of all us. Though Smith’s work has generated international interest and is held by collectors worldwide (Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Monaco, Dubai, London), the artist’s home and studio are based in London.
