7000 Strokes Artwork

Hello, my name is Christian, I am an American artist living in Tokyo. This piece is inspired by the golden panels on the walls of the old imperial palace in Kyoto, Japan, as well as Japanese calligraphy. I layered gold foil over a black canvas, then painted over top. This is a part of my paint strokes series, where I count out several thousand individual paint strokes one by one to form a cohesive image. These individual paint strokes working together remind me of the individual hairs in a calligraphy brush. It reminds me that groups of individuals can work together to create something greater than any one paint stroke could be. This is a complex machine, this is a country, a culture, it is whatever you want it to be. Thank you for taking the time to view my art.
