This is a mixed media piece. The background is a print of the original 'Abel' sculpture but I have worked onto it with hand cut paper elements to give depth. The print is window mounted and the paper elements break out of the constraints of the mount into the white space around the image. The piece is a limited edition of 50, but every one is unique. The colours and shapes will differ each time as they are hand cut and the composition will slightly differ each time. Details about the original Abel sculpture: This hand finished print is named Abel after the writer Abel Meeropol who wrote the lyrics to Strange Fruit, sung by Billy Holiday. The image came to me in 2019, I was angry and frustrated. 39 migrants had died in the back of a refrigerated lorry here in the UK and Donald Trump had been talking about feeling like he was being lynched. At the time I did some research into the brutality of lynching and discovered the Strange fruit lyrics with featured crows and everything came together. The pain, anger and insufferable injustice. This work will be on display and available to purchase at the Other art fair, March 9 – 12, London.
