About The Artwork

This artist's book is a representation of the Mexican Landscape, submerged in violence, disappearances, political corruption. Each page shows a different approach to violence and the trace it leaves on my country's landscape, creating a "cartography" that hopefully will allow the reader to understand and be aware of the situation. In order to make it, I took various elements from the Day of the Dead tradition such as the paper flowers, a box representing a coffin, the Calaca (the skull) as well as traditional fabric and embroidery. The reader has the possibility to organice the pages in whatever order, since the outcome is the same: the landscape shows that Mexico is under a constant violence - situation, wether from the Cartels, criminals, politicians or even the army.

Sometimes I draw. Sometimes I paint. Sometimes I make objects. But most of all, I make artists' books. For me, the book is a sacred, magic object. One that has different kinds of power in it, from a time - capsule that shows specific events, cultural heritage, family stories, to a strong critical voice. Whenever I paint, I focus on form and color. Color has been always interesting for me and I keep exploring its possibilities. I also integrate drawing-like strokes into painting in order to create something in between. Finally, Drawing manifests itself within my work either on paper, graphic arts such as printmaking or litography and in embroidery. For me, Embroidery is at the same time, drawing and writing. In terms of subject, I reflect about memory, melancholic figures and gender-based violence. I find today's world manifests through these atmospheres.
