About The Artwork

This is a hand-signed, 7x5 digitally-created print. For the work, I adapted, colored and cut out an image from an early 1900s real photo postcard of a cat with attitude. I added some Soap bubbles and mounted them all on a polka-dot background to match the cat’s outfit. I added the warning. As the sign says, chase your own damn soap bubbles. This cat absolutely will not. I then created my digital print of this delightful, if recalcitrant, creature. Like all cats, this one has a mind of its own. Yes, it sees you blowing soap bubbles in hopes of engaging it in play. But it is not interested in chasing, swatting or popping them. It thinks you are quite mad to even try to interest it in your silly games. Have you forgotten the rules? A cat chooses the play time. It charms you into playing when IT wants to be amused. A ball of yarn. A catnip mouse. Paper on a string. Whatever. BUT, if you initiate play, it will refuse to be drawn in, particularly if it’s not in the mood to humor you. Soap bubbles. Really? Cats are connoisseurs of comfort. They have developed lethargy into an art form. They have the arrogance of royalty and the vanity of nouveau riche housewives. Pamper them. Cater to their every needs. But, to paraphrase T.S. Eliot, remember, the cat will do as it does does does, and there’s no do do doing anything about it. Eliot, Cervantes, Lovecraft, Collette, Sandburg, etc. all wrote about cats and the human desire to play with them. Cervantes in fact warned, “those who’ll play with cats must expect to be scratched.” Go ahead. Blow bubbles at your cat. But be prepared to be scratched. Place your order instead!

From the New York Times:"Peter J. Ketchum knows how to get the viewer's attention. Shown widely around the country, his pictures commingle colors, people, situations, commentary and mediums in a manner that is provocative, funny and to the point. Attempts to pigeonhole the work as Pop, folk, cartoon, mixedmedia, collage, anthropomorphic, or merely strange tend to fall short of the mark!" Five works were included in 35 Artists of North America, curated by Thomas Krens, former director of the Guggenheim Museum. Ketchum received a degree in fine arts from Colby College and did additional study at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. He studied privately with George Baer. The New York City based artist's work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, The Norfolk History Museum and Colby. It has been shown at the Brooklyn Museum, The Bushnell, The Springfield Museum of Fine Art, and The Discovery Museum. The artist has shown in solo and group shows in Boston and NYC, including Exit Art, Lumina, SOHO 20, HERE, the Williamsburg (Brooklyn) Art Center, Real Artways, the Charter Oak Cultural Center and TNC Gallery.
