About The Artwork

I enjoy painting flowers and plants. I can play with shapes and indulge my love of color. My more recent paintings are the product of a several step process that I enjoy immensely. I put down the background and let that dry. Then, after much staring at what emerges, I coax out shapes by adding and subtracting color. What gradually emerges over time is always a surprise and always an interesting journey. This is a also a collection of paintings that combines watercolor, specialty paper, tea bags, newspaper, texture mediums, sand, ink—you get the idea. I used Strathmore Bristol 500 Series Bristol Vellum Paper, and the original is 14 x 17 inches. The media are specialty paper, glossy gel, bead gel, ink, and tissue paper. What I am exploring lately is collaging faces using a wide variety of mediums. I work on the "edge," taking the two-dimensional format and expanding it or pushing its limits and playing with people's expectations of those limits. I mount the collage onto foam board leaving a border that creates a frame. This frame is then incorporated into the artwork itself. The frame is not something that is added later, is external to and "confines" the piece. My aim is to create a piece of art that remains open to the viewer to fully enjoy the texture and to continue to be witness to the steps in the creative process. The work remains a part of the living world, organic and not sealed and set inside a time capsule. This Mixed Media piece has been mounted on foam board creating a 2.25 inch border. The border was then decorated to create a frame for the piece. The back of the framed piece has a description of the work including the date it was created and the media involved as well as a hook attached for hanging.

Shipping & Returns

Always an artist in various media, I began painting late in life and have little regard for rules in the creative process. Art represents freedom. I am for the most part untrained and strive to preserve my own artistic vision. Texture is my passion, but I enjoy experimenting with lines, repetition, and layering. My art spans a wide variety of subjects and techniques. That's what keeps me fresh. Occasionally, I become very involved in color, but I am also at home playing with only shadow and light. My Work has been shown in galleries, appeared in magazines, and is in the homes of art collectors around the world. I can be reached at joyce@jabsart.com @handle → @jabsartdc
