ABOUT THE ARTWORK

We all carry polarizing emotions of deep grief and rapture. With this series, I deconstruct my personal moments of divergent emotions, and feelings of marginalization, to either repair or relive these dichotomous experiences, with the hope that you too, can recall yours.  A “MITER” is a union formed between two edges that meet at an intersection. The foundation of my work begins with unrecognized artisans who fabricate manhole covers, architectural grids, and moldings. To execute, I rely on topical catalysts of urban lattice work by collecting repetitive geometrics as inspiration. The symbolic image in this MITER series begins with a photograph and digital manipulation of a street grid used to help the blind at an intersection. Eventually they take on organic form as I constantly reduce and redefine ordinary markers of existence, provoking one to rediscover the unnoticed and ubiquitous splendor of the unobserved and bring the outside, in. This assemblage series merges my competence as a graphic designer and fine artist using an unusual combined process of photography, cyanotype, digital manipulation, lithography, monoprinting, silkscreening, oil painting, resin and collage. Cyanotype with washes coated with resin on a cradled wood panel.

Artist Statement As an only child raised by my single mother, coupled with a lineage of of generational depression, my social skills developed slowly and awkwardly. I spent my formative years alone in my room on my red bean bag chair with markers and sketchbooks. I fused myself to large families and invited myself to their dinners to better understand what it felt like to belong. Even with decades of raising my own family and cultivating a community, I am still in pursuit of repairing and transforming my feelings of isolation and have recently understood, ironically, that I am far from alone. To soothe these emotions, I wander in urban cities photographing architectural grids created by unrecognized artisans which become the physical foundation of my work. The accumulation of these images becomes a memento of my emotional experience. Eventually this documentation takes on new life as I reduce and redefine ordinary markers of existence as I explore possibilities through various mediums and processes. This series aptly named, “MITER”, is a union formed between two edges that meet at an intersection. The repetitive insignias you see throughout my work are objects we often pass over, and provoke us to rediscover the unnoticed and ubiquitous splendor of the unobserved. My role as the artist becomes a conduit for the observer to access their own creativity, all of which begins with your phone camera and a walk. The quietude of my work is attributed to the solitude of my youth and the practice is the space where I untangle and restore myself. This assemblage series merges my competence of graphic design and fine artist using a unique combination of photography, cyanotype, digital manipulation, lithography, monoprinting, silkscreening, oil painting, resin and collage. In addition to painting, I am an advocate supporting emerging artists. impART Council is a free art community in response to the inadequate or costly information available to artists. By hosting expert speakers in the business of art this speaker series helps streamline the visual art process. Serving public schools, I have directed curriculum based school-wide art shows and in-class education for the underserved. I have also been selected into fellowships by Arts4LA and The LA County Arts Education Collective in the pursuit of quality and equality arts education and nurture students who aspire to take a career in visual arts.
