I work as a professional screenprint editioner, which requires accuracy, precision and repetition, and have found that, maybe as a release from this, my own practice has evolved a more abstract, spontaneous and painterly approach, using silkscreen printing to create multi-layered, unique, monoprints, usually also including handwritten, screenprinted, text and gold leaf. Each print is built up of a succession of many layers of semi-transparent colour printed one on top of another, sometimes starting with a colour blend as the base layer and then added onto with monoprinted layers, which are painted directly onto a blank screen, or a selection of hand painted shapes which are exposed onto a screen in the normal way. I think of the pieces as paintings, with some of them letting me know that they are finished while others get put away in a drawer to be potentially used as a base for another series later. The words and phrases I use in my pieces are based on my life experience, by the situations that we have all been through in the last few years and where we find ourselves now, both socially, politically, and personally. They explore the meaning, use and misuse of words by the media and government to influence, manipulate and confuse us, and my own experience of aging, being a 'female' artist whilst also running a business and the state of the world as I see it, often humorous and exasperated in equal measure!

My practice has revolved around printmaking since completing my BA in Fine Art Printmaking at Maidstone College of Art in 1987. After spending many years working as a screenprinter and signwriter creating signage for pubs and businesses I went back to art college to gain an MA in Printmaking at Camberwell University of the Arts in 2009, before setting up my own screen print editioning business, Hippo Screenprinters, where I screenprint editions for artists and galleries. Working as a professional screenprint editioner requires accuracy, precision and repetition and I have found that, maybe as a release from this, my own practice has evolved a more abstract, spontaneous and painterly approach, using silkscreen printing to create multi-layered, unique, monoprints, usually also including handwritten, screenprinted, text and gold leaf.
