This piece is deeply connected to my paintings, with all my works intertwined by shared themes. It draws inspiration from the dense, overgrown landscapes of Barbados and Antigua, where the lush vegetation hides the path ahead. Initially, the vibrant flowers and rich colors invite you in, but as you move closer, the overwhelming foliage creates a sense of suffocation—what starts as a warm invitation turns into something more foreboding, much like a fairytale that conceals a warning beneath its beauty. I used textile and tufting techniques in this piece, drawing directly from the fabrics of my childhood. Growing up, my mother saved for years to afford precious textiles and rugs, which were proudly displayed in the "front room" parlour—an almost sacred space where only adults were allowed. This piece, designed to hang on the wall, reflects the reverence we held for those textiles. Mounted on canvas, it honours the fabric like a painting, bridging the gap between art and textiles, and celebrating the materials that shaped my upbringing.

I am a London-based artist, born and raised in the vibrant heart of the city. My journey began with a focus on textiles, a passion that continues to shape my multidisciplinary work. I hold a B.A. Hons in Textile Design, and my creative practice explores the intersection of identity, heritage, and artistry. As a first-generation Black British artist, my work is a personal and narrative exploration of the complexities of identity, particularly what it means to connect African, Caribbean, and British heritage. My art delves into the challenges of navigating cultural identity—what does African heritage mean to a Caribbean person, and what does being Caribbean mean to a British person? These questions fuel my practice as I examine the idea of assimilation, asking whether it dilutes cultural legacies or strengthens them. My work is a celebration of the colors, patterns, sounds, and textures that define my ethnicity, but also an inquiry into how these elements merge and sometimes clash. Through painting, rug-making, digital drawing, and print, I explore how overlapping textures, patterns, and narratives can both harmonize and disrupt—much like the experience of cultural assimilation. My practice speaks to the complexities of being seen as “other” in spaces where artists like me are often overshadowed or tokenized. At its core, my work is a celebration of heritage and a bold statement about identity, belonging, and legacy.
