ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A mixed media painting created with acrylics on canvas. This piece of work involves , my exploration of people’s view of the colour pink including my own, which I use often in my work, but don’t wear. It may not be the colour that people don’t like, but what the colour pink has come to symbolise in our society, soft, girly, sweet and feminine and the gender high jacking of it, the negative connotation of being girly and weak, despite it once being a masculine colour. It may not be possible to separate how I intuitively feel about pink to how we have been culturally conditioned to feel about it. Different colours evoke different responses which could be influenced by personal and cultural factors.

J Suyi

United Kingdom

J Suyi is London based mixed media artist in the U.K. In her practice, She predominantly uses mixed media in the creation of her abstract works, she prefers to blend, bleed, and boldly use different medium, relinquishing control in favour of expression. she also uses her work to explore her dual cultural identity through re-discoveries of her heritage from travels in Africa juxtaposed with her life and travels in the western world. She sometimes engage in an intuitive and meditative process, where she lets the creative process guide her which leads to the making of audacious textured abstracts with bright colours and metallic pigments. She occasionally uses her expressive stokes and multi-layered textures to investigate deep philosophical questions, around existence, spirituality, the way we choose to live our lives as individuals and how we deal with life challenges and navigate societal expectations. She is self taught and has been creating professionally for the last 7 years. Building on her academic pursuit in MA in Research, her recent practice involves researching and exploring the use of unusual materials in her art form, where she has used drawing pins to add a contemporary feel to a classic figure in eye catching sculptural creations. Her work has been exhibited and sold internationally and the UK. She takes commissions and has collaborated with corporate clients in the city of London and Canary Wharf were she has curated exhibitions involving her work.
