Entrusted to Conceal, Am I the Beginning or the End Artwork

This series of paintings are inspired by the walls in and around my neighborhood growing up. I began my artistic journey by doing what most younger brothers do and that is by following my older brother around and doing whatever he did. In my case it was graffiti on any surface I could find. I developed a love for the art form even if I didn't participate in it in any meaningful way. The walls I grew up around were covered in the names of local artists, some were good most were not. I found myself drawn to the battle not just among the graffiti artists themselves trying to put their work on display but also the building owners trying to buff out the work itself. In that struggle I found a beautiful ever changing painting of abstract forms and a myriad of colors. Each wall would evolve and decay in the most amazing way. I first tried to capture what I saw through photography but I found the photographs never felt like my own work. In this series I attempt not to simulate but to deconstruct what I loved so much about those walls. The paintings are made on canvas but not stretched, intended to be displayed like a photograph. The canvas is taped off and I paint beyond the edges so that the finished piece looks and feels like a section of a wall unbound by the edge of traditional canvas. Almost as though you can imagine each piece as a part of a larger whole.
