About The Artwork

In modern society, man has lost his natural identity, attempting to fit into this brave new world. The process of assimilating into society and searching for the right path often leads to a point where he no longer knows who he is, what he should do, what society expects, or what he truly desires. He finds himself on a path surrounded by boxes whose contents remain unknown—whether they are full or empty, useful or not, meaningful or not. Despite being halfway through his life, he is still exposed, bare before himself and the essence of what he has, what he had, and what he will have. He is still alone. The texts are written in Cyrillic script, originally from newspapers. The prominent headlines include "Fiftieth Birthday," "Alone," "Space Tailored," "Exploring One's Potentials," and "Places of Truth and Change." The artwork is created on cardboard, with the figure painted in oil, and the boxes made of cardboard.

Jelena Vragović was born in Vršac, Serbia in 1973. She is a member of ULUS and ULUPUDS. She had independent exhibitions in Belgrade, Vršac, Pančevo, Novi Sad, Kučevo, Dimitrovgrad, Arilje, and Niš. Furthermore, she has participated in numerous collective exhibitions and art colonies in Serbia and abroad. Her art consists of landscapes and figure paintings and has received a plethora of rewards throughout the years. Old Greeks treated the female nude paintings as passive beauty while the male nude paintings were presented in action and seen as the embodiment of gods themselves. Erotic female bodies are seen as objects, while erotic male bodies are treated as a sacrifice of epic existence. Erotic male nude paintings seem to have remained the last taboo – they are rarely painted and thus I wish to bravely offer my perception of the topic. The paintings are an act of rebellion against the world that is asleep, resembling an epic scream and action that we gave up on.
