About The Artwork

“Hertford Bridge of Sighs" Digital Drawing, Gicle'e Print on Hahnemuhle paper. 38.5x29cm. Limited edition.©P.Bortoli 2021 This graphic work was inspired by a dream during the current global pandemic. I was visited by the lion of Saint Mark, an iconic representation of my Venetian roots. The lion appeared in many forms and colours, coming to meet the ox of Oxford and the stag of Hertford College by Hertford Bridge. Hertford Bridge, often called "the Bridge of Sighs", is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane in Oxford. It was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson and completed in 1914.

I was born in 1965 in Venice, where I studied History of Art and later trained with Emilio Vedova. I use a wide variety of materials and techniques to explore decline and regeneration within urban culture and make sense of the dynamic process of change and transformation within a variety of environments. I have shown my work in a wide variety of contexts: traditional solo and collective shows; indoor and outdoor performance and installation projects in collaboration with other artists and musicians: in particular, a performance at the 2001 Venice Biennale, the 2002 Liverpool Biennial, a series of shows at the Unity Theatre and Bluecoat Art Centre in Liverpool in 2004, Modern Art Oxford in 2008 and most recently a personal show at Taplow Court near Maidenhead. Most recently I have been focusing on private commissions, inviting people into my studio to see my work or taking my work onto the streets in interdisciplinary live performances.
